5 star Motors progress into next round

Vauxhall Motors progressed into the Second round of The Isuzu FA Vase with an emphatic 5-0 win away at Swallownest, continuing their run of great form after their comeback victory in midweek against Winsford United.

The afternoon’s play started in a fast paced manner as Damien Eastham was forced into a double save. He should’ve arguably held the first effort but the Motors keeper ensured that the scoreline remained level as he saved the rebounded effort.

There was a great chance for Adam Smith to score the first goal of the game as he ran through on goal but he slotted the ball wide of the far post.

However, Bobbie McDonnell would put his side into the lead on the 15th minute as he too had the opportunity to run through on goal with his effort being slotted past the keeper.

The hosts had strong shouts for a penalty turned down ten minutes after McDonnell’s opener, much to their frustration. Yet it wouldn’t take too long for the visitor’s lead to be doubled with their earlier scorer placing a great pass through to Buckley who slotted his chance away.

The lead for Mick McGraa’s side should’ve been extended to three goals just before the half-time whistle blew as Ben Dufton-Kelly, who had replaced Liam Turner in the starting eleven before the game, flashed the ball across the six yard box but Buckley was unable to reach the ball at full stretch.

Motors started the second half well and their third goal would come just after the hour mark when Tom Mitchell played a great ball through for Buckley who shoved off his marker and slotted the ball into the top corner to net his brace.

McGraa’s first change of the afternoon came when Buckley and Michael Burkey were replaced by Haydn Cooper and Jamie Eaton.

McDonnell had a few fantastic chances to net his brace. An open header fell to the forward inside the area but the effort was comfortably saved by the goalkeeper.

However, he would soon get his second when he rounded the keeper and blasted the ball into the net.

The visitor’s domination was being made evident but Swallownest were close to getting a goal back for themselves when their effort rattled the crossbar.

Sealing the tie off, McDonnell scored his third and final goal of the match. The forward’s performance was sensational and as has been the case many times this season, Motors fully deserved their win.

Vauxhall Motors’ next game is at The VanEupen Arena on Bank Holiday Monday as they face Burscough. They will face Emley AFC at home in the next round of The FA Vase.
