Spoils shared in Goaless Stalemate

MARTINS 0 v 0 VAUXHALL MOTORS

Tried as hard as they could, Vauxhall’s had to settle for a second away drawn game of the week at St. Martins on Saturday.  Following on from the 1-1 draw at Sandbach on Tuesday, Motors were in need of a Hallmark Security League victory but in truth there was very little between the two sides.  Both had chances to break the deadlock but on this occasion, a draw was probably a fair result even though Vauxhall played the more controlled football.

Motors captain Tom Mitchell had a great forward run from the back only for his stinging shot from distance to be palmed away by the home keeper George Austin.  St Martins responded with a shot that flew well over the top before Dave Webb exchanged passes with Joe Brandon, before firing wide of the target. Jordan Davies then brought out a decent save at the other end from Kristofer Leigh, as the sides traded efforts on goal.

The Motormen were hard done by on 29 minutes when Webb’s well struck free kick cannoned off the near post and shortly after the same Vauxhall player brought another save out of Austin. Towards the end of the first half, Motors had a let off when Dave Easthope was adjudged to be offside having converted a left wing cross with his close range header.

The visitors seem to up the tempo at the start of the second half, closing their hosts down. Mitchell, Danny Cross and Webb all had efforts on the home goal before St. Martins went close themselves.  Motors big chances came in the final ten minutes, when first substitute Ben Greenop hit the side netting from Ben Holmes’ through pass and in the very last minute, Webb’s right wing cross produced a goalmouth scramble which the hosts survived.

Motors now have a run of five successive home games, starting with the visit of Stockport Town on Tuesday evening followed by more Friday night football at the Syncreon Arena when Barnton are the visitors – both kick off at 7.45pm.
