On the 17th outing of the league season, Vauxhall Motors’ unbeaten start came to an end with a 2-0 away defeat at Charnock Richard.

Louis Holt and Carl Grimshaw were the men on the scoresheet on a night to forget for the visitors.

Vauxhall got close to striking first through Ben Holmes but his free kick from thirty yards crept over the bar just before Charnock put themselves in the lead on the fifth minute.

Louis Holt latched on to a long ball which caught Mick McGraa’s defence out before slamming his effort past keeper James McClenaghan.

Although it was the hosts that had started the game more positively, Motors’ period of attack was close to bringing a goal through Bobbie McDonnell as the forward’s effort was cleared off the line.

Halfway through the first half, McClenaghan kept his side in the game when he prevented Charnock doubling the lead on the counter.

There was very little action that followed from that opportunity up until half time as Ryan Donnellan’s side went into the break with a narrow lead.

A few minutes into the second half, McDonnell could’ve levelled the scoreline as he was presented with a good chance to do so. However, his effort was blasted over the bar.

Charnock struck their second when previous goalscorer Holt’s cross landed on the head of Carl Grimshaw who’s effort was fired into the net from close range.

Motors made three subs in the last half hour, as well as receiving two yellow cards, but they were unable to get themselves back into the match as their unbeaten start to the league season came to a gutting end.

Vauxhall are back in action on Saturday afternoon as they face Northwich Victoria away from home. All support for The Motormen is appreciated.
