John Parker previews our season opening trip to Prescot Cables

The waiting is over.

After a summer of hard work on the training ground and a productive pre-season programme, Vauxhall Motors begin their 2026/27 Northern Premier League West Division campaign on Saturday afternoon with the short trip to Prescot Cables.

The Motors head into the new season in confident mood after an encouraging pre-season, testing themselves against opposition from every level of the football pyramid. Now, though, the focus shifts from preparation to points as Chris Herbert’s side look to make a positive start to the campaign.

With local pride on the line and both clubs eager to begin the season on the right foot, all the ingredients are in place for an entertaining opening afternoon.

The Opposition

Prescot Cables are one of the North West’s most established non-league clubs, with a proud history stretching back to 1884.

Playing their home matches at the Auto Safety Centre Stadium, Cables have spent much of the last decade competing at Step 3 and remain a well-supported club with plenty of experience throughout their squad.

Relegation last season means they line up alongside the Motors in the West Division this year, and they’ll be determined to make home advantage count on the opening day.

Last Season For The Bulls

Last season was one to forget for Prescot Cables. Relegation from the Northern Premier League Premier Division brought an end to their stay at Step 3, with the club finishing 19th on 42 points.

Despite ending the campaign with back-to-back victories, results elsewhere meant they couldn’t avoid the drop. Returning to the West Division, Cables will be aiming to bounce back at the first opportunity and lay down an early marker in front of their own supporters.

Last Time Out

The last meeting between the two sides came in January 2024, when the points were shared in a hard-fought 1-1 draw at the Auto Safety Centre Stadium.

Prescot took the lead with a 17th minute John Murphy goal before the Motors responded shortly after the restart through Jay Harvey to earn a deserved share of the spoils.

With both clubs beginning a new chapter this weekend, Saturday’s meeting has all the hallmarks of another closely fought contest.

The Challenge Ahead

Pre-season has provided plenty of encouragement for everyone connected with the Motors.

Strong performances against the likes of Liverpool, Stoke City and Salford City have shown the progress made throughout the summer, while the squad has continued to grow in confidence with every outing.

Those results count for little now, however.

League football brings a different intensity, and every tackle, every chance and every point matters from the very first whistle. Chris Herbert’s side will be looking to carry their positive momentum into the new campaign and reward the travelling support with a strong opening-day performance.
