Opposition Preview: Cammell Lairds 1907 FC
John Parker previews our short trip down the A41 for our first pre-season game
Vauxhall Motors begin preparations for the 2026/27 campaign this Saturday with the short trip across the Wirral to face Cammell Laird 1907 at the OWS Engineering Ltd Stadium.
The fixture has become a familiar part of pre-season in recent years and provides both sides with a valuable early test as preparations begin ahead of the new season.
The Opposition
Cammell Laird 1907 will compete in the North West Counties Football League First Division North for the 26/27 season and continue to build on the proud footballing heritage associated with one of the Wirral’s most historic clubs.
While the current club was established in 2014, the Lairds name has been part of the local football landscape for well over a century. Football connected to the famous Cammell Laird shipyard dates back to 1907, with the original club enjoying spells in the North West Counties League and Northern Premier League before the present-day club was formed and began life in the NWCFL in 2014.
Their home, St Peter’s Road, has been synonymous with football on the Wirral for generations and remains one of the area’s most recognisable non-league venues.
Last Season
Lairds finished 12th in the North West Counties League First Division South during the 2025/26 campaign, collecting 40 points from their league fixtures. They scored 54 goals across the season and ended the campaign with encouraging home victories over Foley Meir and Eccleshall, giving supporters plenty of optimism heading into the summer.
The squad showed resilience throughout the season and proved capable of producing strong performances against some of the division’s leading sides.
In the Dugout
The Cammell’s are managed by Glyn Norman, who oversees a squad looking to continue its development ahead of another competitive NWCFL campaign.
Saturday’s Test
As is always the case with the opening pre-season fixture, the result will be secondary to building fitness and valuable match minutes. Both managers are expected to rotate their squads throughout the afternoon, giving supporters an early glimpse of new faces alongside familiar ones.
For Vauxhall Motors, the game provides the first opportunity to put the hard work of pre-season training into practice against competitive opposition, while local bragging rights always add an extra edge to meetings between the Wirral’s two best-supported non-league clubs.
We look forward to seeing plenty of Motors supporters make the short journey up to Rock Ferry to back the lads as preparations for the new season get underway.
